Detachable Shirt Collar - 1850s - 1860s

Register today for a free online class on how to sew a beautiful reproduction detachable shirt collar.

This is a great little project to construct a detachable shirt collar that can be worn with just about any shirt to upgrade your historical impression. Based on an original collar from the late 1850s / early 1860s. While its small size makes it an easy project (takes me about an hour and a half to make one), that same small size does demand greater accuracy, as being off by 1/16″ with your stitching in certain places will show, so it's recommended that you have some sewing experience.

The collar is one size fits all, attached in the front with a buttonhole to your top shirt button, and tied in the back with a linen tape.

This is a free online class, and you can work at your own pace. The four lessons come out twice per week, but you can follow along more quickly if you want by checking off your progress as you work. And no need to feel rushed either! Take as long as you need to work through the material at whichever pace is most comfortable for you.

There are a few supplies you'll need but you can get started right away with the drafting portion as long as you have a paper and pencil, as you wait for your supplies if you have to order anything. I've linked to my preferred sources for the materials but feel free to use your own sources.
